Simply put, QTT is any non-"5NN" CW activity, or Quality Telegraphy Time with Quality True Telegraphists! This idea came from a number of telegraphists who were concerned about a decline in regular CW activities such as the QSO, in favour of button-pushing "5NN TU".
Please take a look at the QTT page on the 30m Info menu for more information.
So where to QTT meet up? ANYWHERE and ANYTIME! However, in some parts of the world, such as Oceania, Africa, Latin America, South East Asia, there is very little QTT CW and therefore we often used to call CQ for hours without responses. To fix this problem:
The QTT activity has some QTT Centre of Activity frequencies! This way we have a better chance to find satisfaction from contacts on CW. These frequencies vary day by day, and although can be on any band, any time, any frequency, on 30m we recommend using the same number of kHz from band edge as the current UTC date.
For example, today is the 17th of the month, so around 10117 kHz. There is also a QTT Hour which again focuses activity for those who have less time to be on air, and increase the chance to meet up with others. QSO during QTT Hour can also be counted toward the monthly QTT Minutes with bragging rights, or just for fun. See QTT Hour.
The idea here is that at least for those in less active parts of the world, having a daily QTT CoA frequency means while you are doing other things such as Emails, house chores, etc, you may want to leave your RX on, even if with narrow filter and/or squelch, to be able to hear any calls and QSO from other QTT. By the frequency changing each day, we avoid long-term QRM and local QRM that differs from place to place, as well as potential interference to Primary users.
You may also like to have your own slight variation on that, e.g. by adding a certain offset, and post that in your Email signatures or on your web page, for example, mine is currently 300Hz higher, which I can write as 101date.3kHz. I can then switch in narrow filter if there is local noise, and turn on the squelch if I want silence, and hear any calls on that frequency.
The idea of QTT is simply to have fun with any and all non-5NN i.e. "proper" contacts, at minimum an honest signal report, ideally your name, QTH, and why not also exchange on the 2nd over, your power and antenna? After all, a signal report without information about power and antenna doesn't give you any idea about propagation and achievement!
I hope to see you in QTT often! I hope too that you like to engage in non-5NN activities! 30m is the ideal band for such because contests are not held on 30m. Let us now encourage "DX" to emulate the noble example and high standards of QTT Jean ON8RA-5T0JL (SK). Wouldn't that be nice and satisfying to exchange at least real RST and Name with DX?!
